Valerie Callender, MD, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Howard University College of Medicine, demonstrates a live Aerolase NeoDerm treatment on a Fitzpatrick Skin Type V patient at the 2026 American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in Denver. The NeoDerm's 650-microsecond 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength bypasses the epidermis, increasing the safety profile for darker skin types.
In this demonstration, Dr. Callender covers patient preparation and eye protection protocols for Skin Types V and VI, treatment parameter selection on the NeoDerm, and how the device addresses multiple conditions in a single session, including post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, facial erythema, rosacea, telangiectasias, and laser hair removal. She also references a retrospective study of 225 patients published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology showing mild to no adverse events across all skin types, with the laser used in conjunction with topical acne medications. Post-treatment guidance includes gentle skincare, barrier repair cream, and mineral sunscreen protecting against UVA, UVB, and visible light.
The patient reported a pain level of two out of ten with minimal post-treatment erythema and no corticosteroid needed.
