Aerolase develops, manufactures and markets the most advanced aesthetic and medical dermatology laser systems for today’s cosmetic laser industry. The company has reinvented the medical laser in the form of LightPod laser technology. LightPod lasers are multi-use lasers that can be used for a wide variety of treatments including, but not limited to, permanent hair reduction, skin rejuvenation, skin resurfacing, scar reduction, scar revision, removal of veins and vascular and pigmented lesions, clearance of acne and rosacea, removal of tattoos, debridement of decubitis ulcers, podiatry applications and many others. Aside from the innovative LightPod lasers from Aerolase, all other skin lasers in the industry have one thing in common: in order to generate the high levels of laser fluence needed for efficacious treatment in hair removal or vascular applications, they need to operate with very long pulse durations. Those lasers have their origins in large pieces of equipment that were not initially intended for medical uses but for industrial applications. So, the high energy pulse durations of these lasers generally range from 3 – 50 milliseconds. This range of pulse durations is so harsh on human skin that it is necessary to continuously cool the skin with some form of gel, spray or contact cooling, and in most cases this is still not sufficient to make the treatment tolerable for the patient. Therefore, it is often necessary to utilize topical anesthetics in addition to continuous skin cooling in order to use such lasers on human skin tissue. This reduces safety for the patient and increases cost for practitioners. This problem is exacerbated in the case of ethnic skin also known as skin of color (Fitzpatrick skin types 4-6), which is a class of skin types that are high in concentration of epidermal melanin. Because melanin absorbs some of the laser energy of most laser modalities, more melanin tends to equate to more heating and a higher risk of pain and even pigmentary changes. LightPod lasers and MicroPulse-1064 technology changed all that allowing treatment of dark skin patients with no skin cooling required and no pain, which makes LightPod Neo truly an all skin type laser.
Aerolase offers the latest in ablative technology with the LightPod Era aesthetic laser, which again sets itself apart with a uniquely gentle pulse duration, known as MicroPulse-2940™ technology. In the past, the CO2 modality was initially used for laser skin resurfacing to reduce wrinkles. It delivered noticeable results but the treatment pain, recovery time and side effects were far too much for patients to tolerate. The side effects include scarring and long-term hypopigmentation, with treatment pain so substantial that general anesthesia became a standard part of the protocol. Later, fractional lasers were developed with the goal of substantially reducing treatment pain and discomfort and downtime, but they did not live up to their expectation. Fractional lasers are still quite painful and actually involve extensive amounts of cumulative downtime as they require at least 4-5 treatment sessions – each session involves significant downtime and the end result of the fractional laser treatments generate does not justify the patient’s cost and suffering. The LightPod Era is an erbium laser, which is a modality that ablates the skin tissue 16 times more efficiently than CO2, thus avoiding collateral damage in the dermis. It also utilizes the gentlest pulse duration available, 0.3 milliseconds, while still generating 1,200 millijoules per pulse. Now you have the ability to achieve profound skin rejuvenation in a single low-discomfort full-area ablation treatment, with similar or even less patient down time compared to just one fractional laser treatment.
